We went to a bday party over the weekend and the evening ended with a game of Trivial Pursuit. Four teams of four made the game and my team consisted of me, Jack and two totally awesome friends.
The team that ran the game (read the questions) wanted us to die. To be fair, one of them was drunk, another was a socially inept science nerd with a competitive edge, another really did not want to be there (and might have been a little racist?) and the last one, well he was pretty neutral.
We were met with condescending reactions to our wrong questions.
Team Kill: "Who was Charlemagne's father?"
Our team: "(hesitation followed by wrong answer)"
Team Kill: "WRONG. It was Pippin the Short. You didn't KNOW that?!"
Our team: "Errr, no. We didn't."
Me: "Obviously, Pippin the Short! (in the voice of Comic book guy from the Simpsons)"
We were met with hostile yells.
Jack: "(being a silly smartass but not in any serious manner)"
Team Kill, the drunk one: "SHUT THE FUCK UP! YOU'RE A FUCKING RETARD, YOU JACKASS!"
Everyone: "(awkward silence)"
Team Kill, the drunk one: "(reads next question like he has down syndrome)"
We tried to make light of the situation by joking around. One member of our team even farted several times in the company of our new acquaintances. Thinking back on it, that may be one of the reasons why we were hated even more, even though i was crying and holding my nose with laughter. Also, gently trying to call Team Kill out on their overly competitive and condescending attidude by impersonating them in my nerd voice probably didn't help either.
Good thing we eased the tense situation by winning the game!
I couldn't have left that place sooner and I was scared to look Team Kill in the eyes. What is it with board games and competitive people who make them so awkward? It's called "Trivial Pursuit" for a reason.
