Steven Reich, the first techno!

My sister and I are listening to The Music for 18 Musicians. She's totally right about techno music coming from Reich because I hella feel like raving right now! Either that she's wrong and techno music actually comes from similarly minimalist people who like to bounce around on ecstasy.

I went to a rave once about six years ago in San Francisco. It was called Cybersomething. I didn't want to go because I thought raves were dumb but I ended up there anyway. Turns out, it was dumb! Luckily I had a fake ID at the time so I got as drunk as I could while my friends popped the x. The dancing was like walking in place in beat and pumping the fists - I didn't like doing that. Also, people around me would be all like, "oooo give me a light show!" and some dude with glowy sticks would wave them around the person's face - that was funny.

One thing I like about the music I'm listening to right now is that it's all played by classical instruments, nothing electronic. If trance, house, drumb and bass, jungle, happyhardcore (hahaha) etc. were played by musicians I think a. musicians would have more work and b. people would be able to recognize how cool music can sound live - live as in not in electronic form.

You can do all sorts of crazy shit with classical instruments. Unfortunately I don't know how to do any of that. And it's too bad that contemporary classical music sounds like barfing - for example, music composed using math equations sounds like I ate curdled milk and am barfing it out algorithmically. The compositions are super complicated but I wouldn't define it as music. I think music needs to include the aspect of actually enjoying the sound, otherwise it's just well organized noise.

Now I'm getting a bit tired of the Reich. I have a short attention span because for my three-year old tantrums I used to bang my head on the ground so I have a bit of the brain damage. I guess I'm really not into minimalist music since I don't like reggae either.

So there you have it. I want people to like the music I get tired of after ten minutes so long as it's played by real instruments. Now for some Phillip Glass - less repetitious, more movie soundtrack cheesey.
