Revisiting the Animal Collective Post, Kind of, not really.

Okay, so there's music you instantly like, music that you have to listen to over and over again until you like it, and music that sucks when you listen to it. As I said earlier, Animal Collective is the middle of those options. And it's all good for obvious reasons (one shows good song writing and the other shows clever song writing) except for the music that sucks because, well, it just sucks.

Which brings up another much more tangential but somewhat related issue - KDFC 102.1 irresponsibly plays classical music. Classical music back in the day, when crazy shit was going down in history, had a lot more meaning than popular, Britney Spears-y-esq songs (feel free to debate me on this as she has come out with poignant hits like Womanizer). You listen to classical music not only because it sounds cool and because there are all these instruments playing at the same time doing weird stuff, but because the composers were saying stuff like, "down with the bourgois!" and, "God I hope this revolution doesn't kill me, eek!" It's one thing for a radio station to play music that encompases a particular genre. It's another thing to say what effect the music is supposed to have on you when that part is subjective.

The worst program KDFC promotes is "Island of Sanity." What musician is sane? What artist is sane? In the words of Michael Ian Black using antiquated language, bullpucky! You're not supposed to pass off classical music as something that relaxes you after work or whatever. You're supposed to actually listen to the damn thing! This may seem to contradict my "music is subjective comment" because if you want to relax to classical music, you can. But my point is that radio stations shouldn't have that kind of say.

According to KDFC's list of 2008 Allstars, Beethoven's 9th is number one. It was also number one last year too. This doesn't quite make sense to me because Beethoven died hellza long ago, which shouldn't be a factor because his music is totally awesome, but isn't there a shitload of other classical music out there? That's like making the Beatles the best rock band of the year every year for the next 200 years. Also, out of the top 10 of the Allstars list Gershwin is right at the tenth spot. He's also the most recent composer and he died in 1937!

Seems to me like KDFC is playing it safe. Too safe. For godsakes, Pachelbel's Cannon is number 12! That's got to be the most overplayed, shitty wedding music alternative to the march ever! Okay, so the 2008 Allstars list is a listener's poll and not the radio station's choosing. Should I have mentioned this earlier? Yeah. But perhaps the listeners wouldn't have picked these songs if KDFC diversified their music a bit? Eh?

Well, back to putting emails in chronological order. Toodles!
